331 | Expanding Communication and Common Sense - part2




Continuing from
Day 328 | Expanding Communication and Common Sense
which I suggest reading to follow the discussion from the beginning, as that is the context for the comment and perspective I share here.

However, I do see some faults and kinks in your argument, I hope to point these out and ask you to clarify these points.

The biggest objection I have to your argument is the polarity between self-interest and common sense. What I'm trying to get across here is that things are not simple. Common sense, as easy as it is to understand, is never the solution. Corporate wants profit. That's common sense and also a claim that is self-interested. However, this might not be the case (Social Enterprises are the prime examples.)

Second point, you turn against the paternalistic idea and yet you advocate for education of self-responsibility - aren't you, in a way affecting the children by forcing this line of thought while diminishing their freedom to explore their own ideology, making mistakes and correcting them? (Best way to learn has been making mistakes and getting "punished" (this term is used liberally here) from it.)>>



My perspective:

This need not be a polarity. Self-interest can be aligned to not harm what is best for all.

We should in fact ask ourselves in this world: Why is each one´s self-interest not aligned to the interest of life as a whole? How can we protect / support / value life, if that which we define as our self-interest is not aligned with the interest of life as a whole?

I´d say that common sense is always the solution. Obviously not in the current system, which is why it requires to be reformed/transformed through and into Common Sense. Because currently the system runs at the cost of life, and profit is placed before life – this is simply unacceptable.

Why do I say that common sense is always the solution? Because when we start considering common sense as ´what´s best for all´ within decision-making or policy-making, then the results will also be ´best for all´.

Not “against”, but simply pointing out that the paternalistic system is not working because within it we only learn according to the ´morality´ of the ways/paths those before us have walked, and thus we are not really given the chance to investigate all things and keep what is best/good for life in fact. Paternalistic also implies a certain ‘superiority’, like the elders ‘know better’, when we can in fact see in our world that is not so because our world simply isn’t getting any better in terms of actual life-betterment and benefits for life – all life, not just those with money. Those before us did not realize self-responsibility as life, which implies responsibility for life – otherwise our world today would be a place where life is free, safe, and supported.


When I refer to education as being important, I in no way exclude the freedom to explore, test-out and investigate for oneself, nor do I imply forcing any line of thought. Besides, life is not nor should it be subject to ideology; Life is practical living, and therefore an assessment of what practically works is possible. This is where common sense comes in and the consideration of what is ´best for all´ which means what works for all.
It is only an accepted belief within the current system that supposedly it is not possible to have solutions or policies that work for all and support all. This is but a way to ´justify´ inequality and abuse, and to protect those that hold the ´power´ at the cost of others.

Self-responsibility is not a ´line of thought´ - it is the stance and the standing that results from realizing that if I harm or ignore or abuse even one single part of life, this harm/ignorance/abuse affects life as whole, which includes me. Self-responsibility thus implies investigating all things, understanding cause and effect, and making informed decisions that will not harm one or life as a whole.
And I speak about education because in the current system, children do not learn to think for themselves, they do not learn to investigate all things, they do not learn to view consequences in terms of cause and effect so as to be able to assess outflows and thus make informed decisions that will in fact be best for life.
